Feather Hair Extensions

Jennifer Love Hewitt

When the feather hair extensions craze emerged early 2011, I honestly was not a big fan of it. This style has taken me a little while to warm up to, but the more I see it, the more I LOVE it! The trend was in full swing by early June and now has swept across the entire nation. No one really knows who started the trend, but regardless America has embraced it. The feather trend crosses into all age groups and I’ve even seen them on DOGS!

Danica Daniel at DrJays.com tries to wrap up the style with “Bohemian chic but reminiscent of the 70s hipster vibe, feather hair extensions are a playful and noveau way to add length and a powerful pop of color to an otherwise drab head of hair.” I would say its Pocahontas meets boho chic and together they go to a punk rock concert!

With feather hair extensions you can choose bold, bright colors that are sure to ruffle some feathers in your circle of friends, or you can go with the natural colors that would suit a more formal occasion or lifestyle. Â Carolann Joy Salon has only the finest, all-natural feathers. Feathers can be skinny or fat and come in all various colors, everything from hot pink, neon green, bright yellow to dark brown, taupe, and solid white. We offer all different lengths to suit your hairstyle. In only a few weeks our first salon order of feathers is over half gone. With our second salon order we have an even larger selection of feathers to choose from. Yay! I’ll post a picture when we receive everything and get it organized!

Feather hair extensions last from 3-8 weeks and at Carolann Joy Salon we install feathers with Micro-beads instead of adhesive. Â These are a special ring that is clamped shut securing your new feather to your hair. No damage is done whatsoever to your hair. You can treat the feathers just as you would your normal hair, wash them, blowdry, curl and even flat iron (but with this you should use caution and low temperatures).

How long do you think this fad will last? I feel that it will run its course through the end of the summer. I could be wrong though, the feathers are becoming harder and harder to find. Featherlocks, a popular extension supplier that even sells a version for dogs sells out everyday by mid morning. The harder it is to find something, the more in demand it is. The Feather Extension trend could pick up traction on the fall styles and run its course through the end of the year!

For pricing please see our Feather Hair Extensions page!

This is such a good review that I added it to Heidi’s Bio!

by Elle J on June 23rd 2011

Oh, good glory. I’ve finally found a place to get my hair cut. It only took 9 months in the Seattle(ish) area and one disastrous cut from a pretentious douchebag.

Heidi cut my hair. I really love her. She was super excited because she had just taken a class on this particular cut and it did wonders for my hair. It’s a really good sign when you’re stylist likes to stay current and is undergoing continuous education. I love that.

This salon is in the lower level of a Victorian home in Redmond. It’s fairly easy to find, but it is in a house. They sent me an email and text appointment reminder with tips on how to find their place and I had no trouble at all. The environment inside is cozy and inviting and I was offered a beverage (coffee, tea, water).

They have a really nice website with actual pictures and staff bios. Check it out.

I’m not getting my hair cut anywhere else.

Understanding Your Hair Type

Anyone who works regularly with hair, like a stylist, has to understand everything there is to know about your type. The reason behind this is that in order to treat it properly, your stylist needs all the background information they can get to avoid doing unnecessary damage. After all, hair is never created equally.

If you were to pull a strand of it out of your head, you would see a small bulge at the end of it. This is known as a follicle, and your hair grows out of each tiny follicle embedded in your scalp. It contains hundreds of cells which constantly divide and merge to form each hair as it grows. Because it is filled with your cells, each follicle of hair also contains your DNA, your own unique blueprint.

Each strand of it is made up of three layers: the medulla, the cortex and the cuticle. The medulla is the inner layer, and is only present within thick hair. The cortex is the middle layer, and provides strength, color and texture. The final layer, the cuticle, protects the cortex from damage. The entire finished strand is made up of proteins called keratin, created through chemical processes within the body, and made up of proteins processed from the foods you eat. Good stuff in, good stuff out. A bad diet can literally ruin your hair.

Genetics and geography also play a large part in how your hair is created. In people of Asian descent, the strands are round and thick, African descent grants you flat strands, which creates that natural fuzz and curl that embodies the Afro. Those of European descent will often be blond or dark with very thin strands. The only exception to that rule are the redheads of Irish descent, who actually have the thickest hair of all, beating out even the Asians for those luxurious tresses.

So, the next time your stylist makes what seems to be idle conversation with you, especially if you are a new client, she is actually asking just the right questions about your background. With enough information about your heritage, lifestyle, and even eating habits, a good stylist can instinctively choose the hair products that will work best with your hair, and will benefit it the best. Do a little research on your family tree, and you will see what we mean.

Funny Story about day #1 of Winter Specials

At 12:20pm today the salon phone rang and a beautiful sounding woman named Hillary said she was referred to us by a friend and asked to book the ‘Out With The Old’ Package from our Winter Specials Packages. I gladly got her on the schedule for 5:00pm today.

What felt like minutes later at, 12:45pm, I received an email from our website with a appointment request from Hillary for the ‘Out With The Old’ Package with a note for desired time that read “After 4:00 PM; (any day of the week, Mon through Fri, is okay!)”. Also there was a note that she was referred by a friend.

8 minutes later I replied with:

“Hi Hillary,

Excited for you to come in to the salon today!… I have to ask who referred you off of Facebook so they can get their complimentary deep conditioner at their next appointment.

Carolann”

7 Minutes pass and I get this from Hillary:

“Hi Carolann,

By today do you mean 2/28/2011? The person who referred me is a coworker. She and her daughter recently came by for haircuts and she was very happy with the service. Her name is Jill B****.

Hillary”

(PS, if you are reading this.. Thanks Jill!)

5 Minutes later I respond:

“Yes I mean today 2/28/11 at 5:00pm… Will this work or would you like to come in another day and time?”

And finally 1 minute later Hillary says:

“Carolann,

That works fine for me!

I will see you later today at 5:00 PM.

Thank you.

Hillary”

Client Story – Janet Barry

Janet Barry and Carolann Joy
January 11, 2011
By Larisa Amir

I met Janet Barry, one of Carolann Joy Salon’s first clients, for tea. This former Superintendent of the Issaquah School District has forty years of service in public education, including experience as the Associate Superintendent of Peoria, Arizona and Superintendent of the Central Kitsap District. Janet’s blonde hair was cut in short piecey layers. With her funky glasses, she looked confident and open, maybe even fun-loving.

“A lovely way to move into retirement.”

Today, Janet holds a teaching position at Washington State University. She has seven grandchildren and four adult children. She also works on superintendent searches and as an expert witness. “It’s been a lovely way to move into retirement,” she said with a laugh. “And I still need hair.”

In 2005, Janet was working sixteen-hour days. “I had other important things going on, and my hair looked that way.”

When Janet met Carolann at Exposé Salon, she thought, “This is quite a mismatch.” Carolann, in her early-twenties at the time, looked “very with it,” joked Janet. “We laugh about it now.”

Carolann was sure Janet would be a one-time client. “She was rigid with her hair. She asked for it to be exactly the same, just a little shorter.” I asked Carolann why she thought Janet came back after the first appointment. Carolann laughed and said she didn’t know. She then added, “I got the cut right.” She had listened.

Over the next year, the two got better acquainted, and Carolann recommended gradual style adjustments. I joked that this sounds like dating. Janet nodded and added, “I was looking for someone to trust and grow with.”

When Janet began to prepare for retirement in 2007, Carolann proposed a change in style. They settled on a bob. Janet described it as, “Updated, relaxed, feminine, pretty. We had some growing to do. We went to work on it.”

I was surprised to hear this successful career woman talk about needing to grow, even if it was about her hair. Janet can lead 24 schools through change; changing oneself must be different. The word “we” seemed key here.

Transformation

Janet said, “I knew Carolann as she was growing into her self, into marriage, and motherhood.” I sensed Janet was growing into new interpretations of these roles, too.

Carolann remembers the two talking about “love—lots of love, especially in the last five years. Janet was a staple person I talked to.” And Carolann was able to give to Janet, too. “I’m from a different generation. I’m able to bring something new. She brought something more grounded.”

Carolann added that Janet has seen her grow closer to God. “Ten years ago I had no spiritual side.” I asked how religion came into their conversations. Carolann said, “With questions like: What’s been going on in the last five weeks? How have you been emotionally handling all those changes?” At first I said these aren’t the typical questions you get at a salon, and then I realized they could be; it’s the answers that are unusual. Carolann and Janet talk openly and honestly. Carolann gave me her response to how she handles change, “I turn it to God and don’t keep so much of the burden to myself.”

For both Janet and Carolann, their friendship gives them the chance to share the burden and share the joy.

The ultimate compliment

Janet pointed to her stylish haircut, new as of six weeks ago. She and Carolann had been plotting a change. On the day of her appointment, Janet still hadn’t decided if she was ready for the new look. Carolann held her scissors to Janet’s hair and said, “Come on. Let me do it. You’re going to love it.” They have a playful partnership. “She enjoys pulling me out, respectfully, gently, and with persistence,” Janet said.

When Janet’s daughters saw her new cut at Thanksgiving they paid her the ultimate compliment: they said she looked edgy. I think she looks thrilled. Carolann’s own style has changed from her early hipster look to a self-assured elegance, a perfect match to her new salon.

Janet told me a favorite quote: “Work is love made visible.” The words are Kahlil Gibran’s. Maybe style is the inner self made visible. Style doesn’t change someone’s life; style is someone’s life.

Caution, with speed and decisiveness

I asked Carolann about how she decided to open her own salon and how her relationship with Janet contributed. “She was supportive. She leaned on the cautious side. She asked all the big questions—like what about parking or the commute.”

When Carolann had the idea of opening a studio salon, she talked to her husband Jordan that morning. They found a location already set up as a studio and went to see it that day. By the end of the week they had signed papers to lease. I was astounded at her speed and decisiveness.

Janet adds, “You won’t understand [Carolann] without seeing her space. Her husband did the floor and walls. It’s a special expression of her person and her purpose, a place where close relationships are formed, without distraction, confusion or chaos.”
